Keep the rule simple in your brief: model what affects size, interaction, and light. Everything else is texture or shader work.

  • Shift micro-detail out of geometry—use normal or displacement maps to save render time and make LODs predictable.
  • Maintain a single master file plus purpose-built derivatives (web, realtime, print). Enforce naming conventions and a minimal versioning policy early.

Materials and textures: when photorealism matters — and when it doesn't

Materials set perceived quality. A standard PBR workflow (albedo, roughness, metallic, normal) will cover most commerce needs, but photorealism isn't always optimal. Stylised or simplified finishes can increase clarity on small thumbnails and make variants cheaper to produce.

Make materials repeatable and indexed so a change at the system level (a finish update across SKUs) propagates automatically.

Lighting and camera: make it photographic, not cinematic

For commerce, lighting must reveal form and finish. Aim for clean, balanced setups that prioritise legibility: soft key, logical fill, and controlled highlights. Think like a product photographer—lighting is documentation, not theatre.

  • Run a clay render pass first to validate silhouette, shadow falloff, and composition before adding materials.
  • Use HDRIs for ambient response but pair them with area or rect lights to control highlights consistently across variants.
  • Avoid extreme depth of field on hero product shots; reserve selective blur for lifestyle images where mood helps context.

Build once, reuse everywhere: shot strategy and delivery

Practical export checklist

  • Master EXRs (32-bit) with AOVs for relighting and compositing.
  • High-res PNG/JPEG/AVIF stills for product pages and ads—deliver variants as separate files.
  • Optimized glTF or USDZ for AR and realtime; bake lightmaps where necessary.
  • Layered PSDs or flattened composites with alpha for quick assembly into marketing templates.

Gate the pipeline with clear checkpoints: silhouette approval, material approval, lighting approval, and final shot approval. Use low-res proxies for early reviews to keep feedback fast and focused on the commercial job rather than pixel-level tuning.

Iteration, measurement, and the feedback loop

Treat renders as testable creative assets. Iterate in short cycles and change one variable per round—lighting, crop, background, or material—to learn what moves the KPI. If conversion is the goal, measure performance in the channel the asset will run on and link changes back to click, add-to-cart, or view metrics.
